I’ve gotta admit, and I’m probably in the minority on this one, but Tom Daley has never really done it for me. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is totally adorable and has an amazing body – I think anyone who denies that is pretty much just hating. However, I still pretty much just go “Oh, him” whenever I read about him. To be honest, I kinda think that he’d be relieved by that, though. Considering the fact that people come up to him ad nauseum offering up sex, he might like to know that there are some of us out there who view him as an actual person, and not a walking orgasm – which, by the way people, is a pretty gross thing to do to anyone. Let’s try to be a tad more respectful – if not for people we think are attractive, then at least for ourselves. After all, life isn’t a giant Grindr app… at least, not yet. All that being said, I think it’s incredibly admirable that at only 19, as a public figure, he decided to come out in a now pretty famous youtube video, in which he stated that he was in a relationship with a man, who was later revealed to be Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. Now, for those of you thinking that it’s no big deal that he came out, maybe you’re right. But the fact is, he really didn’t have to… at least, not yet. There are a ton of public figures out there – a lot older than him, I might add – who solidly refuse to come out of the closet. So, for that, I give mad props to Mr Daley.
Anyivegottenofftrack, in his coming out video, Tom Daley actually came out as bisexual. I was reading a couple of comments yesterday and people were arguing “but he NEVER said he was bisexual.” Actually, poonkpoonks, when he made the comment “I still fancy girls”, that’s exactly what he was implying. Maybe some Americans aren’t familiar with the term “fancy” in that regard. No, it’s not only used to refer to Elton John’s costumes, or Gywneth Paltrow’s… everything. It means “to like” or “to be into”, which indicates that Tom was saying that his diving board still gets stiff for chicks. It was probably the classiest and most British way of saying “Yeah, I go both ways.”
Now, that was totally fine. Except, now in an interview on Keith Lemon’s Celebrity Juice, Tom’s shutting down his previously stated two-way street and saying that he’s exclusively gay. I understand why some gays are pretty pissed off at this move. It sorta gives ammo to those heteros who insist on spouting that being gay is a choice, since it seems like Tom was all this time sexually into females and now all of a sudden has chosen to no longer be turned on by lady triangles. I get it, I do. But I can’t be too hard on the guy. He was young and probably terrified at putting himself out there like that. He must have believed that coming out as bisexual would maybe soften the blow or somehow alienate his fans a little less. After all, how many of us used the bisexual excuse when we first came out before we got the nerve to shed it off completely? So, to all the actual bisexuals out there, I just wanna apologize for muddying your orientation like that; I love you all. And as for Mr Daley, I say way to go, sir… take a dive!
