Not only had I already seen Shortbus, I already owned it. Written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell (who many may recognise from Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Girls) Shortbus follows patrons of an eccentric New York club of the same name. Supposedly, the main character of the film is Sofia, a couples’ counsellor/ sex therapist, who is finally confronting the fact that she is pre-orgasmic – that is, she has never had an orgasm even once in her entire life, and finds it impossible to achieve one, either through intercourse or masturbation. However, the more compelling storyline of the movie is undoubtedly that of “the Jamies”, a gay couple in the process of opening up their five-year long monogamous relationship.

I usually start off these reviews by highlighting what it is that I didn’t like about the movie. You’ll be disappointed to know that I don’t really have any dislikes. Instead, I’ll just use this opportunity to point out the fact that this movie is, at times, pornography with great acting. What I mean by that is that, in an uncommon and slightly shocking turn, the sex scenes depicted in this movie are very much NOT simulated… penetration and ejaculation are even portrayed. My guess is that it was done in an attempt to make the film more avant garde, and enhance the realism of the story. It was definitely something, that’s for sure.

Shortbus mainly highlights the storyline of three distinct groups of people (Sofia, the Jamies, and Severin: a loner dominatrix) who eventually find their lives intertwined at Shortbus, a haven for an incredible assortment of social outcasts and weirdoes. Case in point: one of those “weirdoes” happens to be Shabbos Goy, a transsexual artist whose latest project is An Ode To the Female Secretion, in which he uses fresh menstrual blood as lipstick. I realise that the whole movie sounds highly objectionable and severely repugnant – and maybe on a small scale, it might be – but it is so wonderfully done that it’s impossible to not fall in love with the individual characters and the collective story. In my opinion, the breakout star of the entire movie is James (one half of the Jamies) whose powerful portrayal of a closet depression sufferer is simultaneously haunting and endearing. His role is emphasised even further by his boyfriend, Jamie, who seems to not only be perpetually chirpy, but has not a scintilla of an idea of the depth of the love of his life’s crippling sadness. Fun note: the Jamies (Paul Dawson and Pj DeBoy) are an actual couple in real life. Shipper joy level 10,000!

Shortbus, in its brazen depiction of sex, is a celebration of human sexuality, and sheds light on issues that happen every day but aren’t necessarily discussed, or even really thought about. It is an illuminating, yet very entertaining movie from beginning to end.
