David’s Birthday is an Italian film centred on the would-be family vacation of two couples, old friends all of them. The film ultimately follows the terrible internal struggle that one of the husbands of the group is faced with when he encounters David, the young and gorgeous son of his friends.

I loved this movie! I loved this movie so much that it hurts to know that I can’t watch it all day, every day! I do have a couple of criticisms so, as usual, we’ll start with those. My biggest criticism of David’s Birthday is actually the very nature of the relationship between David and Matteo. The dynamic between the two is set up in such a way that we’re to believe that Matteo is falling painfully in love with the handsome David. Unfortunately, there isn’t nearly enough context provided to achieve this intention. Instead, what we wind up with is the very evident fact that Matteo is falling painfully in lust with David. Indeed, from the very first scene with the two of them, Matteo is rendered almost speechless at David’s beauty, signalling a profound physical attraction above anything else. As the movie progresses, the two don’t share any real personal time together to warrant the belief that this physical attraction has evolved into anything more emotional. Throughout the movie, we find Matteo salivating more over David’s body than his personality and, forgive me, but that seems far more like lust than it does love. Another very slight irritation to me – actually, irritation seems a bit strong; it was really more of an amusing observation – was the fact that this film was dripping with such opulence that it was almost a bit of a task to identify with the characters. While there’s nothing wrong with wealth, nor does it detract from a story, the financial privileges of these specific characters seemed to have been flouted at every possible opportunity, though not necessarily blatantly. Perhaps it was done to juxtapose their social stature with their less-than-enviable personal lives, in which case I suppose it did its job.

Otherwise, this movie was pure perfection from beginning to end! Its development was markedly slow, but I quite like that. It gave the viewer an opportunity to understand each character increasingly as the movie went on. The acting was absolutely brilliant by every member of the cast. So much so, that a few times while watching, I forgot to pay attention to the English subtitles… so enraptured was I by the characters. Despite my earlier criticism that I felt it to be more a situation of lust than love between Matteo and David, I found the struggle that Matteo was going through no less compelling, or in need of empathy. Both the cinematography and directing were amazingly executed. Furthermore, I absolutely loved the parallels that were drawn between various scenes in the movie: the opening opera scene and the closing dramatic scene (I should note that this movie, no matter how you put it, was basically an opera in cinematic format); Francesca’s (Maria de Medeiros) reaction to the beach death and the ending; there were quite a few others, but I’d rather not get very literature-heavy in here.

David’s Birthday was a beautiful story, and I am absolutely thrilled that I got the opportunity to see it.
