This is another movie I don’t really understand why was on the list, but since that list wasn’t up for me to decide, let’s move on. Anyone familiar with Sacha Baron Cohen’s character-led movies know that they go all out, and Brüno, was no exception! Brüno follows a gay Austrian fashion reporter of the same name, whose catastrophic fall from grace inspires him to relocate to America in an attempt to be a celebrity by whatever means necessary. When all his earlier plans fail, he comes to the realisation that the biggest celebrities in the world – like Kevin Spacey, John Travolta and Tom Cruise – are all straight (the shade!), he decides to renounce his homosexuality and undergo a half-hearted “conversion” to heterosexuality. Though primarily a ridiculous film about chasing stardom for completely superfluous reasons, Brüno ultimately turns out to be a love story in disguise.

I only have two criticisms of the movie, and neither is really very harsh. My first is that the film tends to rely quite a bit on cheap humour, evidenced a lot in Brüno’s overly camp mannerisms. Admittedly, it does often achieve its goal, so I suppose that it’s effective despite it being cheap. My second is that, often throughout the film, I kept wondering how real it was. After all, throughout his “conversion” to heterosexuality, Brüno was under the guidance of real anti-gay and ex-gay proponents. Certainly, these people couldn’t have thought this character was real! Then again, these people are dumbshit stupid, so they’d be willing to believe and accept anything they see about homosexuals.

Despite all this, Brüno was quite funny, and even clever in certain aspects. Its eventual love story isn’t exactly what I would call “romantic”, but it was a nice reminder that love can strike anywhere, between two people who wouldn’t have otherwise expected it.
